Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis has torn his ACL for the second time and will miss the 2010 season.
It is the second time in seven months that his ACL has torn, leaving the Panthers without a top defensive player.
His knee buckled as he was backpedaling during non-contact drills at a voluntary workout.
He was not wearing a knee brace at the time, which is surprising given the short period of time since he last tore his ACL.
The Panthers said the loss is particularly tough to deal with because he is such a great guy in the locker room.

With four of their final six games away from home, the Carolina Panthers hope to play well on the road and surge back into the playoffs in 2010.
The National Football League has announced game times and dates for the upcoming season. Carolina opens the season Sept. 12 at the New York Giants. The home opener is slated for the next week against Tampa Bay, and the Panthers remain at home Sept. 26 to face Cincinnati.
Carolina travels Oct. 3 to Super Bowl champion New Orleans. Then it’s back home to face Chicago before the Panthers take their bye on Oct. 17. After the bye, Carolina plays host to San Francisco on Oct. 24, followed by a trip to St. Louis and a home game Nov. 7 against Super Bowl champion New Orleans.
After visiting Tampa Bay, the Panthers return home to face Baltimore. Four of the final six games are away from home, starting with a trip to Cleveland Nov. 28. December begins with the longest road trip of the season, to Seattle, and a home game against NFC South rival Atlanta.
After playing Arizona in the home finale Dec. 19, Carolina plays at Pittsburgh on Thursday Night Football on Dec. 23. The regular season ends in Atlanta on Jan. 2.

In 2009, the Carolina Panthers navigated the second-toughest schedule in the National Football League to a .500 record.
The going should be a little easier in 2010.
The Panthers, who finished 8-8 in the NFC South last season despite the tough schedule, know their home and road opponents for the upcoming season. Dates have yet to be announced by the NFL, but the Panthers know with just a passing glance that the schedule won’t be as difficult as it was last season.
Carolina will play playoff teams in just five of their 16 games in 2010. Two of those games are against Super Bowl champion and NFC South rival New Orleans. The good news: the trip to New Orleans is the only road game against a postseason qualifier. The other games against playoff teams, all at home, are against NFC West champion Arizona, AFC North champion Cincinnati, and AFC wild-card qualifier Baltimore.
The rest of the home schedule includes games with division rivals Atlanta and Tampa Bay, San Francisco and Chicago. Road games feature visits to Atlanta and Tampa Bay for division contests, and games at Seattle, St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and the New York Giants. Four of the road games are against teams that lost 11 or more games a year ago.

The Carolina Panthers have cut veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme, taking more than a $12 million cap hit in the process.
The Panthers made it known just how difficult of a decision it was to release Delhomme, who led them to a Super Bowl and a couple NFC championships.
The quarterback’s play had fallen off so much over the past two seasons that the Panthers were left with no other choise.
They announced that backup Matt Moore would now become the team’s No. 1 quarterback, but they will likely try to upgrade at the position.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick could be an option, and he has already expresses his strong desire to play for the Panthers.
